The Kopje Journal & Review
Privacy statement
Last updated 3 October 2026
This statement explains how The Kopje Journal & Review handles personal information through kopjejr.com and related reader correspondence. The publication is responsible for the purposes and handling of information it controls. Contact [email protected] about this statement or your information.
You can read the public archive without a reader account. Publisher sign-in is reserved for the publication’s editorial account.
Information we handle and why
- Website delivery and security. Hosting and network services may process IP addresses, request times, page addresses, browser information and security events to deliver pages, investigate faults and protect the website.
- Reader correspondence. If you email us, we receive your email address, message and any information you include. We use it to respond, assess evidence, handle corrections, provide support or deal with privacy and accessibility requests.
- Reader support. Contributions are completed on Stripe’s hosted checkout. Stripe processes payment information. The publication may receive transaction references, contribution amounts, payment status and contact details supplied with a contribution for support and accounting. This website does not collect card details in a KJR payment form.
- Editorial material. Sources, published reporting and correspondence may contain information about individuals. We assess that information for accuracy, relevance, public interest and appropriate publication under our editorial method.
- Publisher security. The editorial account uses a password, sign-in sessions, attempt controls and optional authenticator verification. These protect the private publishing functions.
- Your privacy choice. A first-party preference cookie records whether you allow embedded videos, the policy version and the time of your choice. It is not an advertising identifier.
Optional media, advertising and analytics
YouTube players are not loaded until you allow embedded videos. Once allowed, YouTube receives information necessary to deliver its player and may use cookies or similar storage under Google’s policies. We use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced embed address; this does not mean that no information is processed.
No KJR advertising or analytics tags run in this version of the website. If these services are introduced, we will update the information and applicable consent controls before enabling them. Following a social link or opening a video or checkout on another website takes you to that provider’s service.
Providers and sharing
The website uses IONOS for hosting and Cloudflare for network delivery and security. Google / YouTube supplies optional video players. Stripe supplies payment checkout. Email services handle messages sent to the publication. Providers may act on our behalf or have their own responsibilities for particular processing.
We do not sell reader contact information or use this website to share personal information for targeted advertising. We may disclose information where necessary to comply with law, protect people and the service, resolve a dispute, or use a provider to carry out the purposes described here. Editorial publication is assessed separately; contacting us does not automatically make your private contact details publishable.
Provider information: IONOS privacy, Cloudflare privacy, Google privacy and Stripe privacy.
Legal grounds and international processing
Where European or UK data-protection law applies, we rely on consent for optional embedded media; legitimate interests for proportionate website security, ordinary correspondence and editorial work; contractual steps where needed to administer a requested contribution; and legal obligations where applicable to records or disclosures. These grounds depend on the particular information and purpose, and legitimate interests must be balanced against individual rights.
Providers may process information outside your country, including in countries with different privacy laws. Where applicable law requires a lawful transfer mechanism or safeguards, these must be in place. You may ask us about the providers and safeguards relevant to your information.
How long information is kept
We retain information according to its purpose: correspondence while an enquiry, correction or dispute needs it; contribution records for applicable accounting and legal requirements; and technical records according to the hosting and security services’ settings and incident needs. Published editorial records may be retained long term to preserve the archive, subject to correction and applicable rights.
The website’s privacy-choice cookie expires after 180 days. Publisher’s sign-in cookie lasts for the browser session; the application also applies inactivity and maximum sign-in limits. Provider cookies have their own durations, described in our cookie policy. We do not claim that every provider uses a single uniform retention period.
Your choices and rights
You can change or withdraw optional-media consent at any time. Withdrawal stops future embedded-player loading on this website; it does not undo information already sent to a provider.
Depending on applicable law and the circumstances, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability or objection to processing. Our European & UK privacy rights page explains those rights and how to complain to a supervisory authority. We may need proportionate information to verify and locate a request.
Children, sensitive material and changes
The publication serves a general readership and does not offer children’s profiles or public account registration. If a child has sent personal information that concerns you, contact us. Please do not send unnecessary identity documents, payment credentials or highly sensitive source material by ordinary email; contact the editor first about an appropriate way to share it.
We update this statement when our practices change. The date above identifies this version. For any question, use [email protected].
