Through Dew in the Morning and *Harvest of Thorns*, he made Zimbabwe visible from inside ordinary life: the field a family depends on, the authority that allocates land, the tension between Christianity and ancestral belief, the schoolboy confronting colonial power, the young person crossing into Mozambique, and the liberation fighter discovering that independence could not automatically return the years that war had taken.
